Indoor skydiving on Friday night. Saturday bike and run. Sunday swim and run.
So Dave is about to be a daddy. There was a surprise baby shower being planned for his wife, Tracey, but I thought that girls shouldn’t have all the fun so the wheels were put in motion to have a Beer & Diaper party, aka a Man shower. Originally I heard that the baby shower was going to be on March 21st but mid last week I was told that there was a surprise party that would take place on March 7th. This really lit a fire under my a** as it basically amounted to 3 days to plan the dude party. Everybody stepped it up and the surprise party went off without a hitch. Forgot to record the initial reaction when Dave walked in but he was a sport when we did “Take 2″
Congrats Dave and Tracey, You’ll make wonderful parents!
Dear Friends and Family,
Happy holidays! 2009 has been a year of productive growth for me. As I’ve entered my 30s, I’ve gotten more and more comfortable and involved in my activities, job, and community. I did more races, pushing myself to go farther and faster. I learned how to both train and race smarter, and it paid off in results and recovery.
While marking my first whole year as a self-employed consultant, I took more advantage of web 2.0 and social media, strengthening my online identity via a blog (www.johnhayato.com), Twitter (twitter.com/johnhayato), and Facebook. I joined new clubs, like the PacBikes Racing Team, and took on new roles in old clubs, becoming Social Director of Golden Gate Triathlon Club and VP of JETAANC. In addition, I was lucky enough to meet up with many of you through my travels to Japan, New Zealand, and all over the U.S.
Instead of the normal letter I always write, allow me to focus on some fonder memories from 2009, in (mostly) chronological order:
John’s Top 10
10. Traveled to New Zealand, did an Ironman with a bunch of friends, and attended the wedding of Anna and Perry. Bungee jumping.
9. Managed to end up in med tents for two triathlons, both half-ironman distances. One resulted in an IV and the other a lot of icing and Gatorade.
8. Placed for the first time in my age group in two triathlons (2nd place in both Anchorman and Lake Mac).
7. My brother and mom got to see me race in a triathlon for the first time ever. Mark really wasn’t a fan of all the spandex.
6. Purchased a 2002 Subaru Impreza WRX (BLUE).
5. Got a new nickname: Hayatz.
4. Broke three hours in the Chicago marathon: 2:59:48
3. Ran my first ultra-marathon, the North Face Endurance Challenge, a 50 miler.
2. Stayed single for the whole year of 2009 and was “recognized” by being voted ‘Most Eligible Bachelor’ of the Golden Gate Triathlon Club.
1. Made new friends and had a family reunion that was long overdue.
Thinking back on my memories from the year, these and others, I’m extremely thankful for all the good things in my life. My family is doing well, I’ve found a church I enjoy attending, I’m healthy, and I love San Francisco more and more each year. May 2010 be a wonderful year for you! I look forward to keeping in touch.

John’s Top 10
8. “2002 Subaru Impreza WRX”
3. ”Hayatz”

Family reunion in North Carolina and I had to come up with games to keep the girls entertained. Here are three of them.

This past weekend was halloween and I wore a costume that my mom made roughly 20 years ago. Don’t know where the idea came from but she sent it to me a couple weeks ago. The vest surprisingly fit. The headpiece needed some work done. The pants and the tomahawk I made on Saturday.

So this weekend I spent Saturday and Sunday running the trails up in Marin, just over the Golden Gate bridge. On Sat. the plan was to do 15 miles but after encountering coyotes in the dark at around mile 7 I decided to call it a night. It didn’t help that my calf started to cramp. My fear of animals is deep seated and howling coyotes both in front of you and behind of you didn’t help me conquer that fear.
On Sunday, Preston, Lara, and I started a run at Muir Beach with Preston and I planning doing around 20 miles. Great run where we kept our heartrates consistent. His was under 150 and mine around 135. Poor planning resulted in us running for about 45 minutes in the dark. Luckily, the moon was bright but after Saturday night’s run, I was quite nervous. Luckily we didn’t meet any four legged creatures.

For some reason, I’ve been having more conversations with people about my previous jobs since moving to San Francisco. Of course, Matt and I’s little Ramen adventure is usually the highlight of my story. I’m sorry for those who are hoping that we’ll start it up again but I’m 95% sure that Ramen making isn’t in our future. Here’s the Yelp page for our now closed Ramen Shop, Tabe Ramen. Oh GGTC, you’ve been good to me. Now it’s time I give back. Training for races is fun and all but those post workout drinks is where the glue is. You get a chance to take off the spandex, do your hair up, and meet people in an element where it doesn’t matter if you’re an elite, novice, or somewhere between. I promise that nobody will get dropped at a social I’m in charge of.
I’m all for really intense workouts but more importantly I need a place to recoup those lost calories whether it’s in the form of a beer, chocolate milk, or some sweet drink that the Sponsorship director hooks us up with.
As Social Director, I plan on putting in the effort I pour into my training into running successful socials, Wildflower Training weekend, year end parties, and so on. I plan on having an open ear to the types of socials you’d like and also the different organizations you’d like to have them with.
Being Social Director isn’t just about putting on parties and I look forward to applying the experience I gained from being on other non-profit boards such as being the Vice President and Treasurer of the JET Alumni Association of Northern California and from being an advisor on the Asia Society Young Professionals Group. Together I look forward to 2010 being a great year of successful races and memorable socials. It’s all about balance. I also plan on making more use of technology and social networks to:
- create GGTC promotional videos
- Create content for FB and our events pages
